Some people have authority but little influence. Here is how to build the kind of leaders people willingly follow.

What if your greatest leadership influence has nothing to do with your title?

Many professionals wait for a promotion, a management role, or formal authority before they begin thinking of themselves as leaders.

But leadership does not begin when someone changes your title.

It begins when people trust your judgment, value your presence, and believe your actions match your words.

This Week on Lena Speaks

In this week’s episode of Lena Speaks, I sit down with Megan Miller, Continuous Improvement and Employee Experience Manager at Hoosier Energy.

Megan has spent years building relationships, improving processes, supporting employees, and influencing people across her organization without formally managing a team.

Our conversation explores how to:

• Lead without positional authority.
• Build trust before asking people to change.
• Use relationships to reduce workplace resistance.
• Advocate for your own career growth.
• Help people feel seen, heard, and valued.

One of the strongest reminders from our conversation was this:

People support what they help create.

When people are included, heard, and respected, they are more likely to engage with change instead of resisting it.

Influence Is Earned Before It Is Assigned

A title may give you responsibility.

It does not automatically give you credibility.

Real influence is built through the way you communicate, the consistency of your actions, and the quality of the relationships you create.

People pay attention to leaders who listen.

They trust leaders who follow through.

They are more willing to consider change when they believe the person leading it understands how that change will affect them.

That is why connection is not separate from leadership.

Connection is part of the work.

A Question for Your Leadership

Where are you waiting for permission to lead?

You may already have more influence than you recognize.

Your next opportunity may not require a new title. It may require you to use your voice, strengthen a relationship, ask a better question, or take one intentional step forward.

Final Thought

You do not have to manage people to influence them.

You do not have to wait for a promotion to make an impact.

Lead from where you are.

Build trust before you need it.

And use your influence with purpose.

Keep growing. Keep learning. And keep leading with impact.
